Unit Economics of Text-to-Video, UI Patterns in AI, and Baidu and Apple Make a Deal
A smattering of news around the AI industry.
Morning y’all!
Tuesday, again! Is time a flat circle? I’m not entirely sure but it definitely feels like that sometimes as we go round and round and round on our weekly cycle of work, family activities, and finding time (somewhere) to do a little bit of rest and relaxation.
A few tidbits of interesting news around the AI jungle and we’ll get on with our day, shall we? Have a good one friends!

WhatsApp (for Android) is now featuring Meta AI directly integrated into the app’s search bar. This is what I was thinking about as AI will integrate with most of our existing devices and become “unseen” for most folks.
Shape of AI is a growing library for those wanting to understand more of the emerging patterns of interaction, affordances, and heuristics in AI.
Land near power plants is set to become a hot commodity due to AI:
All datacenters are energy-hungry but with more watt-greedy AI workloads on the horizon, nuclear power has fresh appeal, especially for hyperscalers. Such a shift in power also does wonders for greenwashing narratives around net-zero operations.
Not a surprise but interesting to think about how AI is already impacting broader industries through sheer use (and force of will).
Not everyone loves NVIDIA and so a new foundation, the Unified Acceleration (UXL) Foundation, a group formed by Intel, Google, Arm, Qualcomm, Samsung, and other tech companies, is developing open-source software to combat “lock-in” so that NVIDIA doesn’t take the entire pie.
Competition is a good thing and I personally believe these types of “foundations” are anti-competitive and, on the whole, nothing more than marketing.
Chinese giant Baidu is going to provide an AI backend to Apple’s iPhone 16. They beat out rival Alibaba for the role of generative AI in China and some of this tech may eventually head into macOS as well as iOS 18.
This won’t make a lot of folks on the US side happy but competition is competition and it’s driven by economics, mostly.
For those interested in design (me!) I love thinking about the new types of UI’s that are popping up that will help users have tailored experiences based on needs and context. The future is really bright!
A generative UI (genUI) is a user interface that is dynamically generated in real time by artificial intelligence to provide an experience customized to fit the user’s needs and context.
I guess they are calling it “genUI” and that makes sense.
How much does it cost to do text-to-video? This breakdown gives a look at what it might end up costing the end-user. Unit economics are important for anyone building in this space since you don’t want die to lack of funds to produce the outcomes you want for users.
And that’s it folks! A bunch of industry news around these parts. Have a great rest of your wonderful Tuesday!
