Morning y’all!
I got a fun note from one of you yesterday and we started a chat via email (and I really do enjoy getting notes from the community!) about the industry and where it’s all headed.
They were grateful about the issues but slightly apologetic about not being able to read them as comprehensively as one might; please, no need to be sorry! We’re all so very busy with our real lives and so I don’t have any expectations that anyone is reading every word, every single day.
You see, if you’ve been around the industry for any good amount of time then you’ll know that there’s much ado about nothing a lot of the time. In fact, what we all should be trying to figure out are the major themes that are emerging from the everyday slop of AI-related news and consider deeply — when you can — the implications for your own life.
Most of the time you’re not going to come up with much, and that’s entirely ok.
This newsletter is an opportunity for me to do the same: To read what’s going on in the broader industry, to take stock of how it may impact my life, career, and how I make an income, and then find avenues to engage in conversation about it with friends, family, and even small newsletter writers like me.
I think it’s the latter part that needs to be done a bit more, if I’m to be honest. That is, the chatting and conversation part. There’s so much (good and shitty) content out there on artificial intelligence and many of us consume it every single day, but, how many times do we actually sit down and have a hearty chat about it with someone else? I work as a product engineer for an “AI” company and I’ll go days without talking about AI with my coworkers!
Perhaps I’m too close to it but I think it’s also why I write this newsletter and why I get up and craft words to send to you every business day: Because I know that this wave is just another technological wave to ride — much like the many before it — and my job is to ride it as best as I can and to communicate to others about it so that I can understand it as best as I possibly can.
It really is the community part that we find meaning, purpose, and the good counsel and thought that helps us process our world and our work so we can stay focused. And no need to get burnt out either since we’re all playing the long game, right?
The point is this: Read this newsletter when you can. If you can only skim or scan it then that’s fine because I write in a way that makes that easy — it’s by design. But most importantly, chat about it with others. Be intentional. It’s better that way.
Thanks again for all of you who open this up every morning! Let’s keep going.
