Screencapture to Code, Emad Mostaque of Stability AI Steps Down, and AI Nurses
A few links and reads to start the week.
Morning y’all!
Hope you had a good weekend! Yesterday was Palm Sunday and if you don’t know what that’s about it’s a Christian celebration, a week before Easter. For the sake of time and brevity it’s simply about the coming of what many believe is the Messiah, the long-expected arrival of something big.
I thought about this idea when it comes to AI and even had a few conversations about AGI and the many notions about not just what it is but when it’s going to happen. I think we can all agree that the advancements of (generative) AI has brought more questions than answers but it all seems to point to something bigger that’s on the imminent horizon.
I, for one, don’t have a timeline for when all of that is going to arrive but I’m excited by the prospect of bigger and more impactful releases to come. If anything, I’m simply excited to be participating in a growing ecosystem that not only keeps my mind fresh and active but engages my curiosity like no other. And that’s pretty exciting.

This morning I’ve got a number of links and news for the start of your week! Enjoy!
Screen-to-code is an open source where you can screen record a website and have it build a functional prototype for you. Wow.
This isn’t a surprise:
Emad Mostaque is stepping down as CEO of Stability AI. The company will be led by two interim co-CEOs, COO Shan Shan Wong and CTO Christian Laforte. Mostaque stepped down partly due to the push toward the development of commercialized AI products. He says he is leaving the company to pursue decentralized AI.
OpenDevin is an attempt to replicate Devin, an autonomous AI for software development and is attempting to do most of what Devin does but keep it open source. I’m behind that!
OpenAI is going to partner with Hollywood and use Sora as an engine that drives that partnership to assist the film industry in getting up-to-speed:
AI is a divisive subject in Hollywood. Many filmmakers and studios already rely on AI in pre-production and post-production, and recognize the promise of a new crop of artificial intelligence tools. But the rise of generative AI services — which can quickly spit out text, images, audio and, increasingly, short videos in response to queries from users — has also raised concerns about upending the livelihoods of everyone from illustrators to voice actors.
As I’ve said before, I don’t think Hollywood has much to worry about but I do think that anyone working in this industry should learn what this is all about so that they can evolve (their careers) as the industry transforms.
a16z has a survey of 16 ways that enterprises are changing to address the AI opportunities that lay before them. A few interesting high-notes:
Enterprises spent about $7M in 2023 but now have 2-5x budget increases planned for 2024. One company did 8x their budget after seeing 90% cost savings in their execution.
80-90% used closed source models in 2023 but 46% prefer open source now.
External apps are being favored over internal apps to manage hallucinations.
You can read the full report here.
NVIDIA and Hippocratic are building AI-generated nurses offering things like pe-op care, screenings, companionship, and more. There’s a nurse shortage so technology may be able to fill the gap.
MIT are releasing DMD, an AI image generation approach that can produce similar quality images at Stable Diffusion and DALLE at 30x the speed! That is incredible.
SciPhi is an open source platform making it easy for developers to build the best RAG system.
Vocalo can help you gain english fluency by speaking with an AI buddy.
Finally, something a bit heavier — AI and Law:
Ben Evans critiques approaches to regulating AI and software, using the UK Post Office scandal as a case study to illustrate how institutional failures, rather than technological flaws, can lead to significant injustices.
Ben suggests that a broad, one-size-fits-all framework for regulation doesn’t make much sense, especially in light of the rapid development of the space. I agree.
Have a great day folks!
